Hacking Art of Exploitation

The book Hacking: The Art of Exploitation was written in 2003 by Jon "Smibbs" Erickson and is about both computer and network security. The content of the book involves programming and cryptography and provides an in depth discussion of computer security. For more than half of the book, programming is discussed and more specifically basic assembly programming is taught to readers. Furthermore, readers are taught about the creation and ultimately the testing of computer programming codes. In the networking portion of the book, the OSI model, a multilayered computer description, is explained. The remainder of the book discusses how to hide specific facts and information. There is debate surrounding the value and purpose of the book for some believe that it is encouraging and condoning illegal activity while others believe there is no harm in having such a book on the market.

Furthermore, the second edition of the book (2008) explains that "hacking" is all about creatively solving problems and difficult situations and hacking does not always have to be a negative or illegal concept. The author explains how to perform computer tasks and programming in a manner that is understandable for average readers. "Hackers are always pushing the boundaries, investigating the unknown, and evolving their art. Even if you don't already know how to program..... (the book) will give you a complete picture of programming, machine architecture, network communications, and existing hacking techniques
